Can a civilian become a police K9 handler?

In most places handlers are sworn officers first, so the path begins with becoming an officer. Ask a specific agency about its process.

Do police dogs live with their handlers?

In many agencies they do, but practices differ. Ask the department.

Which breeds do agencies use?

German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois are common for patrol work, and several other breeds work in detection. Individual temperament matters most.

Who certifies police K9 teams?

It depends on the state and agency. Some follow state rules, some use associations of K9 handlers and some set their own standards.

Can I train a police dog at home?

No. Police dog work involves risk and legal responsibility and should only happen with qualified, insured professionals or inside an agency.

Is this site connected to a police department?

No. K9PN is not affiliated with any agency, and nothing here speaks for one.

Does K9PN train dogs?
